ArPiCade Excited to receive but sadly no power

Post by Tagnetti » Sat Sep 26, 2020 4:13 pm

I sent this email to the folks at Hi Score Saves. I didn’t know if one of you would know what I can do?

Hello,

I just received my ArPiCade yesterday and unfortunately I realized this morning when trying to hook it up, that the way my system is configured there isn’t power running through the Jamma board.

When I got the system it was wired up to a 60 in 1 jamma. I then thought I was upgrading when I went to a game elf 412 in 1. More is better right? No. Couldn’t save mine or the kids scores. So that sucked.

So since I had experience pulling my hair out with retro pie 4 , I figured an easy solution would be to just buy everything from you guys.

Looks great, but I realized it needs its own power in my setup. I think I found where that should go but not 100% and all I have are usb-c style connectors from the pi 4b.

Do you know what I would need to make this work?

Also I have the cabinet wired with a track ball, but I guess I need to connect it to usb on the pi. I didn’t think of that before. Is there something I can get for that?

I’d actually be open to even swapping it out for a spinner.

I want to get these issues resolved as I plan to do some other systems for my dad specifically a golf game mod and a 4 player setup as well.

I’d love to use the pi2cade as my solution once I find the cabinets.

Thanks
Tom Agnetti

OK, So Pi4 doesn't have same power cord so I tried a same spec one and while it boots up, I have a yellow flashing light. SO then I messed up and accidentally switched to low res vertical because hi res vertical did nothing and now I am at my PC with the card inserted. It definitely went vertical but then I got a message on Dell monitor that it wasnt supported and I had to do 1024x768 and the brief time it did work it was upside down.

Also I have no sound. I figured it wouldn't go smoothly.

SO I am trying to adjust config file to account for flipped screen and now no display.

Also have a yellow flashing lightning bolt which I assume is because i dont have official power supply.

You shouldn't be using random power supplies with the system. It is designed to use the JAMMA power supply only.

You will not have sound at the moment because without JAMMA power you have no 12v going to the audio amp on the RaspberryJAMMA. Therefore no sound to the JAMMA speaker.

What was powering the previous boards in the cab?

Your Dell monitor will definitely want the system running in high res. Unfortunately I haven't released any software for Pi4 that works in high res yet, what software are you using?

Once you have the rest working you should be able to use a OptiPAC or Opti-Wiz (or similar optical to USB converter board) to convert your trackball to USB.

Hi Thank you for your reply. Apparently the PacMan cabinet is different and the way it was powered was through a computer power supply, but had a separate lead powering at first a 60 in 1 when I got it. I added a 412 Game Elf. Again I plugged in its own power off of the power supply and then with the Pi, I realized there actually wasnt any power going through the board. Really just the control connections which are also off because being that it was originally Pacman the 1p and 2p start buttons also doubled as player one and 2 fire. Wouldn't think that was a problem, only I have to figire out how to re-wire that because now ip and 2p start give credits whenever I fire. Thats my issue as is all of this.

The good news is, I used a separate Pi power supply and have the audio going out through the aux. So maybe in my setup the pi to jamma board was abit of overkill. I'm not sure, but it prevented me from wiring the controls again.

I do have it working with separate speakers currently aux connected with their own power supply and using the 3.4 audio jack on the pi.

I am now waiting on a few finishing touch items. I found your documentation so useful as well as many others on the internet.

My issue also was inadvertently opening the emulator settings all the time, because of how my things were wired. SO I disabled that shortcut, only now I can't figure out how to get into those settings mid game again.

I bought this whole kit and kaboodle from Hi Score Saves thinking I would just have everything working from jump. I was wrong, but it is more a result of my weird setup that I got second hand and kept tweaking. I do have a few Raspberry pi 4gb's that I can use down the road, if you develop something for them.

Thanks for even making this possible. Fortunately I learned alot about config files pulling my hair out setting up Supreme builds on my rpi4b's, so it was fairly intuitive. :}

Appreciate the reply.

Tom
