You can use any Pi OS as long as you set it up for your cab (but I wouldn't really recommend it). You need to add/configure mk_arcade_joystick_rpi (or similar GPIO input driver) for the inputs and make sure the video output is suitable for your cabs monitor (and also won't change to something unsuitable when you launch games).

If you have a low res monitor I would recommend just using ARpiCADE as it's intended for low res arcade use. Most distros are intended for high res and a SNES or XBox pad.

As far as I know there are no other current images pre setup for RaspberryJAMMA. At various points over the years there have been versions of RetroPie and RecalBox released pre-modded for RaspberryJAMMA but I haven't seen one for a while.

Sorry to revive such an old topic, but it is exactly my own question and I was wondering if I could ask if there is any further info that my have come to light within the last 3 years since it was posted.

I have been using Batocera for emulation for years and I am much more comfortable using it for my own needs. I was hoping to see if someone had come up with a version of Batocera that would utilize the Jamma board, but I highly doubt it. However, if I have to jump through some hoops to get it working, I would be willing to do so.

You mentioned needing to install a GPIO joystick driver. So I think I can handle that pretty well (here's the link for that so you don't have to go back in the thread: https://github.com/recalbox/mk_arcade_joystick_rpi).

Then you mention the need to lower the resolution. What would you recommend lowering it to? I have found some code to do so, but I want to check to see what I should be working towards.

I thoroughly appreciate any help you are willing to give in this regard.
Thanks in advance

You'll need to use 240p, 256p, 288p or 480i (or other interlaced low res), depending on RPI model you're also forced to use a super resolution (a very wide pixel ratio res that scales common widths well, 1920 wide is common) for hardware reasons. There's no one low resolution that was used by arcade games and older consoles, each did there own thing to some extent. There also wasn't any set refresh rate, rather there was a usable range so it varies between individual arcade games and consoles.

Different RPi models also have slightly different low res output abilities (depends on the video chip and in some cases the firmware), 1920x240@60 is a pretty safe pick if you can only use 1 res. ARpiCADE actually uses about 40 different low resolutions to get as close as possible to the original games with automated switching.

Also how you change the res will depend on both RPi model and software version, the guide you found may or may not be accurate to what you have.
