Re: ARpiCADE_5 - for Pi4 or Pi5
Easy fix for .251 and .269 roms that use samples missing their sounds...
In .mame and .mame269 folders in the home folder on the Linux side, edit mame.ini and change the samplepath to:
samples;/boot/firmware/sample
(note: I advocate in the new release that Dee2er change the folder name to 'samples' versus 'sample', FWIW.)
Also of note... I'm noticing a rather substantial slowdown going from .251 to .269 ... especially in Cave games. Much more so than going from .172 to .251 (though there IS still a slowdown going from one to the other)...
That leaves me wondering if there is a "sweet spot" between .172 and .251.
For a little history... Version .172 is the first MAME release with new license. New documentation. Major ini changes. Extended BGFX renderer (planing to move completely to). Improved screen effects. Major improvement of file handling support. A logical starting point for the newer versions of MAME. From what info I am finding, version .186 brought a number of new arcade dumps to MAME. Version .192 brought a bunch of game emulation including to IGS PGM2. I do believe we used to have options for .192 (or was it .193) and something like .205? I'm having difficulty finding history on anything after .192 unless I want to poke through each versions update logs etc...

Re: ARpiCADE_5 - for Pi4 or Pi5
I think I have used 184, 192, 203, and 230 in previous builds... Any of them could be worth a go, except maybe 184 as it's not going to be faster than 172 or have much more stuff supported.
172 will definately stay, for later CAVE games if nothing else. 269 (or newer) will stay for supporting at least one game that wont run elsewhere. 251 seems a good middle ground but it may be worth trying 230 or earlier, not sure how much will be gained...
I currently have most roms in 251, with some in 172 and some in 269. But it's far from fully setup and tested.
Can do the sample(S) change. No worries.

Version 4 has 172,203,230. Most ROMs on my build are in 172.

Re: ARpiCADE_5 - for Pi4 or Pi5
Been playing... a lot.
I am finding that .251 works 98% of the time. I've moved Cave over to .172 (aside from the two DoDonPachi games that won't run on .172... they're on .251)... and I've moved the later Psikyo games to AdvMAME. Thus far nothing is running on .269 currently.
I'm OK with AdvMAME, .172, .251, and .269 (or later)... and if you wanted to throw .192 or .203 in the mix ... it might be something worthy of at least testing as an eventual replacement for .172... though frankly, I think I am just looking to tinker more than anything so please just ignore this request and STOP me from making more work for myself.

How about we stick with what we have just .251 and .269 sans MAME error boxes.

Oh, and I've successfully added the 7 or so NAOMI vertical games as well. Looking for the artwork/movies for those right now... and of course I'll be making a new wheel logo.

251 no nag update added to first post.
Unfortunately I haven't been able to successfully compile 269, having issues with the newer compiler that is needed.

251 no nag installed and it appears to be working... it's not nagging...
Thank you, sir.

Re: ARpiCADE_5 - for Pi4 or Pi5
Is there any way to get vector games displaying better? They are too big for the screen initially and if I poke about in the menus I can get them to fit but they look awful (on a 15khz CRT). I'm talking Asteroids, Battle Zone etc.
Thanks all!
Thanks all!
Re: ARpiCADE_5 - for Pi4 or Pi5
Probably, but I haven't spent any time on it to be sure. Happy to take a look at it.
Are you using the default 240p only mode or is 480i available too? It's likely (assuming 480i works well on your monitor) that 480i will give better results for vector games due to the extra lines available.
Re: ARpiCADE_5 - for Pi4 or Pi5
GroovyMAME 0.274 (with no nag) has been added to the first post. It replaces 269.
