killer instinct runs on mame 230 at 2ghz but , man, is it terrible
i made a big effort to get it to work in mame 78 as you suggested but no dice, wont run
what held me back is that i did not know what a CHD file was and where they go

any tips on where to drop files for mame 78?

for mame 0.078 make a directory in /boot/romsArcade/mame-078 matching the rom name, in this instance 'kinst', then put the chd file into that folder and treat the romfile as normal. The chdfile doesn't always have the same name but does for KI.

ie:
/boot/romsArcade/mame-078/kinst/kinst.chd
/boot/romsArcade/mame-078/kinst.zip

if I had to guess, you probably have the wrong rom for 0.078 - highly likely if you're trying to use the rom from 230. The CHD is probably the same between MAME versions but roms get updated for various reasons and must match the MAME version.

MAME 0.078 is also known as libretro MAME 2003 plus - may help with looking for an appropriate rom.

I found a copy on youtube called retroarch for android emulator.
It works and has an extensive custom menu.
I am unable to define my controls, but can use the keyboard to play.
Still working out how to set the controls
It is playable at 2.1ghz on the pi v4 on mame 078

UPDATE: you edit the controls using the mame menu, not the retroarch menu
they keys to move around the mame menu are controlled by retroarch so its Z=enter menu item, X=backout, and S=change the entry

it works and at full speed.
movie sequences are slow but who cares
need to remember how to play orchid

UPDATE:
having discovered retroarch I was finally able to setup Tron which wont run on anything but mame 037 (retroarch).
it wont see my mice even if i enable them so i had to use joy 1 left/right as a spinner knob substitute. at least it works

What version of mame are you guys running Mario bros with? 172 works but the sound glitches out on me around 100K, and the walk sound is terrible in 172. I tried 230 over clocked and it’s so slow. I turned on the 2.1Ghz OC and it doesn’t seem to be making a difference for me at least. Popeye has similar issues, with audio stuttering in 230 as well

I have Mario Bros. in 172 but this is the first I've heard of there being a score related audio glitch. I don't think I've played it beyond seeing it was running seemingly well.

203 could be worth a try but essentially I'm not sure. Please post your results if you find anything... I might try 203 and 106 out of curiosity re. the walking sound and post back if it's any different.

EDIT:
tried a bunch of MAMEs at stock speed...
203 slow, 215 (libretro) slow
106 (AdvMAME) sounds better than 172, can't speak for the score bug though as I didn't play long. I'd recommend 106 for now based on the audio.

Thanks! I just used the score for approximate play time haha. The walk sound is always terrible until newer versions of mame, but for me, the audio got choppy and distorted the longer i played the game. I will give 106 a try and see.

Thanks for testing! This is the first time ive really tried using a Pi4. Ive had it for years and never did anything with it. I tried the first release of verison 4 and then went right back to my Pi3b+ lol

I was able to run 106 with samples and the sound is much better. Mario looks like he lags a little, but its probably fine overall. Thanks for the suggestion.

Also, I saw it was mentioned earlier in the thread, was there ever a fix for when you boot to a game at startup, the resolution is funky? Mario Bros boots to the lower left corner of the screen, but its only like 1/4 of the screen size. Works fine from Attract Mode, and worked fine when I launch it directly from the /home/pi/mame-172/mamearcade mario command.
