I'm planning to resize the root partition before the full release so it's very good odds it won't just be a update to the beta release... needs more space for emulators to add consoles.
How goes the battle? Close to a final yet?

Yes, but also not yet... lol. What a helpful answer.

There's been a couple of people who hit issues I haven't been able to replicate to figure out and I got a bit distracted with a new RPi3 version that wasn't compatible with 3.X... I have made some more progress though.

Maybe I should just adjust the partitions a bit for some more space and do another release that should be able to be updated after that. I'm not getting much feedback on this release as is and everything moves along faster when there's more eyes on it. Plus some of the improvements since the original beta are worthwhile even if the rest isn't done yet.

got it all working now.
had to add some udev rules for the usb joysticks to move them out of the way
all 4 joys up except one which needs a new wire harness which i have here

joystick 1 now shows up as js0 so daphne is happy and Dragons Lair works.
even ms pacman can see all the joys

games that ran like crap but work now include:
star wars
marble madness
heavy barrel and other commando type games
still want killer instinct but waiting for a fix or instructions

this project is mostly over
still want to get capcom games working
i will attach pics

Do you remember the coding? I've got a GRS Star Wars flight yoke that when plugged into USB reassigns all my joysticks numbering similar to your issue you had.
