4 player jamma

Post by Brian » Fri Apr 19, 2019 11:13 pm

I recently purchased the four player jamma. I put it in a NBA JAM cabinet. I had to switch out the 49 way joysticks to 8 way joysticks but now I can’t get player three and four to credit up. I don’t even know how to access the menu. Can anybody help me out with this? This will be used for public use

Four player JAMMA, credit issue and menu

I cannot get my 4 player jamma to credit up the third and fourth player. I also do not know how to access the menu. Any help would be much appreciated.

what have you done to connect it up? Just standard NBAJam wiring? Your other post mentioned 49way sticks, assuming they were original how is the cab wired?

If I had to guess maybe there's a wiring difference. Best bet is probably to trace the credit wiring back to the board to see if they're the same connection.

Which version of ARpiCADE are you using? There's been changes in the 4 player setup in each new software release since I made the 4 player adaptor so it helps me to help if I know what you have.

Which menu are you unable to access? There's quite a few menus in ARpiCADE, I'd just be guessing not knowing what you are trying.

EDIT: I've merged the two threads you made about this. This place gets confusing enough without two threads on the exact same thing.

ANOTHER EDIT: if the menu you cannot get up is the MAME menu when using lr-MAME-2003-plus I just figured out a fix for that in another thread:
you can make the shortcut work to bring up the MAME menus in 2003plus by: (keyboard required to set it up)
step1: change to UDEV input driver in retroarch menus ('f1' or start+b6)
step2: exit and restart game
step3: re-open retroarch menus and goto setting -> input -> user 1 binds -> select user 1 L3 button and press 'tab' on keyboard to bind tab as L3.
step4: change the input driver back to Linux raw
step5: exit the game and restart it again, now p1start+joy right will open MAMEs menu as intended in 2003 plus.

Thank you for the response and I apologize for the double post. Truthfully I don’t know a darn thing about arcade games. I have been having someone help me out. I purchased the 4 player jamma from highscoresaves about a month ago. We took out the NBA on NBC boards and hooked up the jamma. The 49 ways joysticks did not work. I but 8 way joysticks and my guy I talked them. Player 1 and 2 except credits and play as they should. We can’t credit up players 3 and 4. We were hoping it was a setting but we can access the menu when hitting the test button. I’m at a lose.

Do I need to hook my arcade game up to a computer?

So are no coin inputs working or just player 3 and 4 coins not working? It may well be a settings problem. Or it could be a wiring issue if NBA on NBC used a slightly different pin out to NBA Jam (I'm not sure if they were the same pinout).

Not knowing which version of ARpiCADE you have makes it harder to help. Are you on the current ARpiCADE 3.84 or have you got some software that was supplied with the hardware? If you're still on one of the early 4 player builds updating to the current version may or may not help (you need to set 4 player mode in the ARpiCADE service menu on current builds, default is 2 players).

Assuming you just need to access the MAME menus and set the coin inputs up does P1 Start+ Joy right open the MAME menus?

I should be able to verify with version I have once the gentleman from highscoresaves is back in town. I will try the player start + right tomorrow and see what I get. Hopefully it’s just a setting. Player 1 and player 2 have no issues getting credits or playing. My only problem is 3 & 4. Thank you for the help. It is very much appreciated.

I got down plus start to pull up a configuration menu but I could not find anything about the coin mechanism’s. Right plus start did not work I will try again soon though. Aside from adding a third and fourth coin except her do you see another workaround

If I buy a 4 slot coin door can it be wired to the 4 player jamma?

You shouldn't need to buy a new coin door (although, yes, it would be possible to wire in your cab should already have whatever you need for 4 players if it's a four player cab). What is your current coin situation? Do the 4 players share a single coin mech or have one each? In Australia it's very common to have 1 coin mech and an extra board that controls the distribution of the credits to each player, my understanding was in USA generally the 4 player cabs have 4 coin mechs (the practical result is the same either way in the end and either method will work).

There's not really 4 player JAMMA, JAMMA covers the video and audio and controls for players 1 and 2. In a four player setup players 3 and 4 typically have their own kick harness style extra wiring that plugs into the board.

Can you take a photo of the menu you got using start + down? (Start+down is the default shortcut for pause so I'm not sure what/which/why menu is coming up - it's possibly all you need to get the coin inputs for player 3 and 4 working. If this is the MAME menu you should be able to set the inputs up through it - the actual method may vary depending on 4 coin mechs etc. Basically you'd go to configure inputs for this game and find coin 3 and set it (select the option and when it's waiting for an input drop a coin through coin mech 3), then do the same for player 4/coin 4.

Assuming your cab has four mechs are you certain the mechs for players 3 and 4 are working? Assuming the player 3 and 4 wiring is correct which spots on the 4 player adaptor did you plug them into? There's one row for Konami games and one for NBA Jam, if you got it mixed up players 3 and 4 wouldn't work due to the GNDS being at the wrong end of the harness (and the inputs for players 3 and 4 would be generally wrong).
