Which version of MAME ROMs is best?

Post by RetroBorg » Tue May 10, 2022 12:49 pm

I've recently updated to ARpiCADE version 3.X and was wondering what version of MAME I should be using?

Listed in romsArcade folder are the following versions:

mame-037
mame-078
mame-094
mame-106
mame-139
mame-172
mame-192
mame-203

I don't know if this comes in to it but I want high score support.

What romset is recommended and why?

On a Pi3 you're going to need to use a few different romsets to get the best out of it.

Generally you're best off trying MAME 0.172 first as it is relatively newish and accurate (compared to the older MAMEs generally seen on RPi) and also has next frame response (tested with MAME pause and frame advance) where AdvMAME and the Retroarch MAME cores have an extra frame of input processing time.

Lots of stuff will run best in AdvMAME or RA cores on a Pi3 though.

High score support should work in most versions of MAME, it's a bit patchy in FBA.

Here's a bit of a list of recommendations for Pi3 (it's a bit old now, probably more stuff could be run in 172):

Thanks for that dee2eR.

I'll check out the spreadsheet and have a play around.
