HAPP USB Trackball + MAME078

Post by FrizzleFried » Mon Nov 19, 2018 4:26 am

Why am I having such a hell of a time getting a trackball to work with MAME078? It works in Attract Mode. I have it enabled in the MAME.ini file in the MAME078 folder on the Linux drive... I have all the different settings set to MOUSE rather thank KEYBOARD.

What am I missing?

I know it's not quite the answer you're after but have you tried AdvMAME and/or MAME0.172? My trackball isn't set up at the moment and I can't remember offhand what I would have done other than I definately used AdvMAME and MAME 172 when I had it all going. It is possible to use analog controls on 078 but there's a complication to do with the Retroarch and the hotkeys system I meant to look at, then I got distracted with Aimtraks & Wii-motes and then 4 player adaptors...

Checking the defaults for analog controls is on my list of things to get to for the upcoming release. I will update in this thread if I find the answer.

I actually tried World Class Bowling and Shuffleshot in .172...

Unfortunately the game runs about 80% speed...

...so I tried Advmame... it works.

:)

And the trackball works.

Can you just move roms to different emulator folders or are there specific roms for specific emulators? I'm playing around with usb trackball and spinner and most of my roms are in 078. I moved a few to the 172 folder, did a romscan and one Araknoid works but one doesn't and Tempest didn't work. Games don't even launch.

Make sure any additional bios files etc that may be required get moved as well, also 078 to 172 is a big jump in versions, may have to try newer ROMS. Check archive.org for any non merged sets. Get if you can find 094, 106, 139, 172, and 203. I may have forgot some...barely awake yet. Happy New Year.

Often 078 to 106 (AdvMAME) works with the same roms, although not always... you have a better chance going from 078 to 106 than to 172 just because the versions are relatively close together. No guarantees though. The best bet is to use Romcenter or similar to audit the roms you have if you don't have access to other sets (xml files in the /boot/user_manual folder).
