Donkey Kong Sound

Hi, I know this has been discussed a bit, but does anyone have a recommendations for the Donkey Kong roms? I am going to be building a DK cab from scratch and I want to run an Arpicade in it with just DK variants, I currently have DK, DKjr, DK2 and DK3 in my MS Pac cab and they all have sound issues, a steady tick/crackle ever couple of seconds. I forget which roms I am using I think 192 but I have to look again, wanted to see what the reconditions are to get as accurate as possible?

If you still have 192 upgrade to the current ARpiCADE and use MAME0.203, as far as I know it's the most accurate sounding one (based on other peoples opinions).

Regular ticks or crackles could be a video timing issue, are you running vertical or horizontal monitor? I will take a look, was going to add in a hack for DKRemix variations anyway...

For DK3 use AdvMAME, if the sound is bad check if you have these lines in /home/pi/.advance/advmame.rc:
dkong3/sound_adjust 5
dkong3/sound_normalize no

Thanks dee2eR, I am running the latest build but I think it was the first version when the 203 folder was still named 192, is the very latest version different?

I think the 203 rom folder has been 203 for a release or 2 now. Latest ARpiCADE is 3.84 found here: viewtopic.php?f=12&t=1062 (the downloads page on the main site is very out of date as I cannot update it.)

I am going to kind of resurrect my old post here, I will be starting a scratch built DK cabinet soon using mostly reproduction but authentic parts, including repro Nintendo Joysticks and buttons, also will be using an arcade monitor.

So the question is I am thinking of picking up another Arpicade for this because I would like to have just DK, DKJR and DK3 and possibly some of the rom hacks later but it is just going to play DK games, the problem I am still having in the testing I have been doing using the one in my Ms Pac cab is I still have not found a combo of Donkey Kong rom and version of MAME that works well enough on the Arpicade, DKJR and DK3 seem pretty good but cant get DK to run well.

I know its emulation but I am really trying to get as close to the original as I can with this. Has anyone had any luck with Donkey Kong running smoothly with no sound issues?

I’m running Donkey Kong ok. I don’t believe I have any sounds issues.

Running a 3b+ not overclocked. Rom is in 0.203 folder. I don’t know which rom version it is however as I’m still learning how all that works.

Mine is in an original Ms. Pac-Man can with a G07 monitor.

Hopefully helps some.

Thanks for the reply, I should clarify the sound issues are more a of light tick sound every few seconds on DK, Junior and DK3 don't do it but every rom version of DK I have been able to get to work does.

interesting. If it's a slight ticking every so often it may be a sync speed issue. DK runs slightly faster than 60 FPS, I remember a while back Missile Command had a similar problem... I may be able to improve it a bit...

In the MAME 172 launcher (/boot/launchers/mame172.sh) find this bit:
# missile command fix - refresh over 61fps hack
elif [ $(lessThan $r 61.00) == n ]; then
aconfig="-intscaley 1 -unevenstretchx -uifont uismall.bdf -nowaitvsync -throttle"
else
and change it to read:
# missile command fix - refresh over 61fps hack
elif [ $(lessThan $r 60.50) == n ]; then
aconfig="-intscaley 1 -unevenstretchx -uifont uismall.bdf -nowaitvsync -throttle"
else
after that try Donkey Kong in MAME172, please report back if it helped.

looks like the version I am currently using in my Ms Pac cab does not have the missile command fix in the mame172.sh.

I can make an new build with the latest version and try it.
