Samples with mame078 (lr_mame2003)

Been trying everything to get the audio samples for Donkey Kong to play under mame078. I've symlinked /home/pi/.mame078/sample(s) to the /boot/sample directory, specified it in the mame.ini, specified it in the .attract/emulators/mame078.arc.txt

What am I missing?
