rom location/folder

Post by TheHandlebarGamer » Sat Jul 16, 2022 7:59 am

Having issues. the documentation says to drop them in /boot/roms/

when i ftp in (or pop the card into my reader) there is a boot folder. inside that is a "romsArcade" folder. no "roms" folder.

so. i made one... made a mame230 folder, advmame folder. dropped roms into them.

run a scan or reboot, nothing shows. is the documentation correct? what am i missing here? going bonkers trying to get this working.......

ok...so. looks like it's kinda working in /boot/romsArcade (the main docs still say /boot/roms (which was throwing me off).

lots of stuff scanning. but tmnt/simpsons are not (which is my main concern, as I own these boards but don't want to use them, I plan on storing them).

any ideas as to why these specific ones aren't showing? thanks!

edit: seems there was an exclusion list..... even from a fresh install from image? tmnt/tmnt2/simpsons were excluded. so, removed them from the exclusion list.

simpsons is working in mame 106. tmnt/2 are not in any mame folder. I do have multiple tmnt/2 rom sets. (one pulled from a friend running a arpicade). no luck with tmnt/2 so far. is there a specific release needed for these?

TMNT 1/2 will work fine. There are 2 different roms in MAME for these games the 2 player and 4 player versions. Either will work but the four player versions are the parent roms and are needed for the 2 player versions to run (depending on how your rom set is built). If you want the versions that are commented out in the rom scanner to appear remove them from the array that is stopping them apperaring. Basically the default setup is to have the 4 player version hidden with the 2 player version available from the menu and both roms needed.

I'm assuming you're running ARPiCADE 4.3 (?) due to the mention of MAME 0.230... I haven't actually written any instructions for ARPiCADE versions 4.[xxx] yet. Any instrucitons that have a 'roms' folder rather than romsArcade etc. are very old (prob from version 3.7 or 3.8, from years ago) - sorry if you've followed some misleading link to out of date instructions (documents from ARpiCADE 3.X.1 will be closest to the way ARpiCADE 4.3 works).

Assuming you're on Pi4 use MAME 0.172 (or newer) for Simpsons, TMNT etc. as the emulation will be better than in earlier MAME versions. If the games are appearing in the menu but not working it is likely you have the wrong MAME romset for that particular MAME version or a missing parent rom or BIOS rom.

parent roms are simpsons.zip tmnt.zip and tmnt2.zip
the 2player roms all have 2p added to the names.

EDIT:
from your PM it sounds like you may also be using the wrong romsets for various MAME versions. If a rom works in 0.106 (advmame) it may not work in 0.172 due to changes made to the set over the years between the versions. You mentioned trying merged and non merged sets but not what version of MAME the set was for...

If you have the games appearing in the menu but not loading it's almost definately your romset is wrong for the MAME version you're trying. If this is the case I'd recommend running your roms through romcenter or similar rom manager using a MAME 0.172 datfile to make sure they will work.

On my own Pi4 I have simpsons and tmnt 1/2 in MAME 172 so it should definately be able to work for you too. I have the following roms inthe mame-172 romfolder: simpsons.zip tmnt.zip tmnt2.zip tmnt2po.zip (this is the 2 player rom for tmnt1, oceanea version) tmnt22pu.zip (2 player rom for tmnt2, USA version) - not sure why I don't have a 2p simpsons rom in there too...

Hopefully that helps with the headache.

ok, so - i have the correct roms (i've tried multiple from dif sets). even some from a friend who's card is from a pi3 using the arpicade (which is why I snagged this plus the 4p adapter).

scanroms_v0007.sh has the parents as an exclusion? am i missing something here? I want to use the parents as I want the 4 player versions?

I removed the exclusions from scanroms sh. i put simpsons.zip/tmnt.zip/tmnt2.zip into mame-172. rebooted. they show - but fail to launch. no matter which roms i use from dif sets. If I place that same simpsons rom into mame-106 it fires up.........

I'll dig up another set. I'm going batty. LOL

thanks for your replies!

If you want the parent roms to show just remove them from the arcade_hide array in
/boot/launchers/ScanRoms_V007.sh -- if you're editing files on WIndows get Notepad++ as the built in Windows editors can cause issues.

They're in there by default so the games don't appear twice on 2 player setups... sorry I don't think I was understanding what the issue was. Not exactly a intuitive setup if you want the 4 player roms to show up.

EDIT: sorry I'm posting a bit behind your progress I think...

yah, I dont want the 2p roms as i'm running a 4p cabinet.

from a set i have, i put xmen on - works. same with the simpsons. tmnt from that same set fails.

tmnt just isn't. i've pulled from literally 6+ other sets (archive) with no luck at all.

Tired literally 11 dif sets. Merged. Non merged. Split.

No go. Even sunset riders from a set that simpsons and xmen works from fails.

I’m burnt out on this thing.

OK I think I've figured out your issue. Thankfully HSS mentioned it to me this morning and said you were using the pre-alpha 4.4 release. I had assumed you were using 4.3. You are only the second person I have heard with the Pi4 won't boot on 4.3 issue and I hadn't yet heard if 4.4 was working on the same issue Pi4s, thank you as it's good to know it boots on these newer Pis.

It looks like your issue was actually related to games that run at exactly 60hz. Simpsons runs at 59.185606hz, TMNT and Sunset Riders are 60hz. No idea why this is an issue on 4.4 yet but I have a workaround. Please try this fix, replace /boot/launchers/resSwitch.sh with this version:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1xChu2T ... sp=sharing

Hopefully that gets it all going for you. Sorry I didn't really understand your issue to begin with and lead you in the wrong direction.
