New Arpicade won't boot - static lightning bolt
Hello!
Firstly, I am completely new to rpi, so keep that in mind. My tech level is high, though (I repair pinball machines and arcade cabinets/PCBs).
So I purchased the Arpicade complete kit from Highscoresaves and installed into my JAMMA cab. I ordered the RPI 3B+ with the 64GB card preloaded with the horizontal front end.
I have a brand new arcade power supply (2.1A) plugged into my JAMMA harness that tests at 5.1 at the incoming header pins (I've tried between 4.8V and 5.2V. All I get on screen is the solid yellow lightning bolt.
The PWR LED on the rpi flash red 8 times - 4 long and 4 short. This repeats in a loop. No activity from the ACT LED.
I have tested the card in another JAMMA cab I have with the same result (one is an LCD and the other is a standard CRT).
As a follow up - I also tested the RPi outstide of my JAMMA cab powered via 2.4A USB - same result.
I reflashed my memory card with the original image just in case I corrupted during testing.
WIth the card out of the RPI, I get a solid PWR LED and no video signal.
Any direction here would be awesome (my kids are soooo sad). It sounds like perhaps there is an addressable RAM issue with eight flashing lights, but that seems muddy.
Thanks so much for any help!
Chuck

Re: New Arpicade won't boot - static lightning bolt
Might want to try downloading a fresh image from the downloads section and put it on a different micro sd card. Also could try loading up the raspberry pi out the jamma setup and run it to a computer Lcd screen to eliminate any of that setup. You could use the hdmi/vga adaptor.
Digging deep here but- IF you are using a micro sd to SD card extension cable in the pi-ensure the write protection tab of your SD/micro card adaptor doesnt slide to the write protect position when you put it in the slot, just to double check that isn't the issue. Also ensure config.txt is setup for your display correctly. Additionally, If you start editing files in the non windows partition of the micro sd card for whatever reason ensure you are using notepad++ which is linux friendly editor. All boot up hanging issues I encountered were because I modified files in the linux partition with an editor that want linux friendly and it couldn't properly boot.

Re: New Arpicade won't boot - static lightning bolt
Thanks so much for the advice!
Well - I know it is not a hardware failure. When I image the latest rasperian stretch with desktop, I can boot!
When I image the Arpicade 3.7 directly from the site - I cannot boot, I get the same PWR flashing LED.
Hmm - just not sure what to do from here. If I can boot with the latest Rasperian, is it possible to copy all the files/programs from my arpicade SD card to the bootable rasberian card?

Re: New Arpicade won't boot - static lightning bolt
Follow up - I just imaged Arpicade 3.811 and that one won't boot either. Do I need to do something else after imaging the Arpicade distro before it will boot? Is this an issue with the RPi 3B+? Jeese, this is so frustrating...
Re: New Arpicade won't boot - static lightning bolt
Imaged 3.82 and it works!!!!
Just gotta copy my ROMS over to the new card. One issue, though - my card is imaged at 4GB but it is a 64GB card - how do you open up the 60GB? I'm just not sure how to do this in linux?

Re: New Arpicade won't boot - static lightning bolt
Thanks for letting me type it out to order the issues
In the end I just needed release 3.82 to be compatible with the RPi 3B+. If you get the package kit from HSS - it won't work. Strange and a bit disappointing how much research and loops I had to jump through to figure that out.

Re: New Arpicade won't boot - static lightning bolt
Glad you figured it out. Prior to version 3.82 of ARpiCADE the Pi3B+ didn't exist so there was no support for the hardware. Not sure why HSS would have supplied old software, hopefully he just made a mistake and burnt it with from an old file or something as I know he has the current version that works in the B+ model Pi3. Sorry for the hassle.
Re: New Arpicade won't boot - static lightning bolt
Well it was a great, if not frustrating, learning experience. Had it worked out of the box, I wouldn’t have had my whirlwind lesson on RPi, Linux and the nuance of Arpicade.
Btw - amazing product. I’ve been waiting years for something like this. I’m dumping my crappy xxx in 1 products. With the exception of medium res games, everything runs fantastic with high score saves to boot. Well done!

Glad you got it sorted, quite a learning lesson but very valuable to understanding how it all works.
Regarding the sd card size adjustment, see my post here: https://arpicade.com/forums/viewtopic.p ... p=135#p135

Thanks braveblue! Yeah, I got that sorted with just a little digging.
Yes, I feel confident I can help others out now and will definitely be recommending Arpicade to others in my nerd circle
