Animated GIFs?

Post by FrizzleFried » Fri Nov 30, 2018 2:00 am

For anyone thinking... "I wonder if I could use an animated GIF rather than the static PNG that is used for 'loading' screens?"

I have the answer.

It's NOPE.

Swapping loading.PNG, loading240.PNG, loading288.PNG to animated gif counterparts resulted in a quick crash to some text before kicking in to attract mode. I imagine the crash to text was something akin to "can't load that format" type of error...

nice idea to have animated loading (& splash etc.) screens.

Did you edit the /boot/nowloadn.sh script as well as replace the png files with gifs? No idea if the pngview program that the script calls can display gif files but without changes to the script it would still be looking for .png files.

If pngview cannot do it there is probably some way to do it. fbi may be able to do it... again customising the script would be needed. I might look into this a bit more some other time.

I did not... I'll have to give that a try... this is the loading screen I'm trying to load in BTW...

That would definitely look good.

I was thinking of trying to estimate the load times for games based on the rom file size (not sure if it's the right approach...), hopefully I can combine the ideas to make an animated gif play for an appropriate amount of time. Your example gif loops well so it would look good played for whatever time.

...tried changing the .png to .gif extension in /boot/nowloadn.sh... nope.

Worth the try though.

Undeterred by failure I converted the GIF files to APNG files (animated png files)...

Now the system will actually load something... what appears to be a corrupted first frame of the animation file... but something...

:D

At least it's a step in the right direction, no?

;)

Hope you figure this out Frizz, that loading screen is awesome, need to use it if you ever figure out the script. BTW I sent you a PM.

I know it's an old post, but has anyone come up with a solution to get an animated loading screen yet?
