Tempest with trackball and good sound? (Also: Kick/Kickman?)

Post by Tapper » Wed Apr 03, 2019 7:05 am

So, I've been trying everything to get Tempest running decently using trackball.

Problem is that later MAME versions have really bad sound issues, like .172 and .203. They WILL use the trackball nicely, though

So, looking at the excel spreadsheet of recommended emulators, and it says 0.78. I tried that version, and yes Tempest runs nicely with good sound. BUT, no matter what I try it doesn't see my trackball. I've tried enabling mouse in the mame.ini in home/pi/.mame078 etc. Nothing seems to work.

If anyone has Tempest working well on Arpicade with trackball/spinner, please let me know what you did.

ALSO: how can I get my trackball working in Kick/Kickman using AdvMAME? Strangely it's not recognized, but it DOES work in other games like Millipede in AdvMAME. :?

Not sure about in AdvMAME but I have Kick in MAME 0.172 running fullspeed and working with trackball. It is the game with the unicycle and balloons right? I'm not sure if it's the same game as Kickman.

Tempest works in AdvMAME for me with trackball. The old recommendation to run it in 078 is for joystick use as AdvMAME doesn't map analog to digital joystick well on the P1 stick (for some reason, for games which originally ran analog controls, in AdvMAME p2 stick works better than p1 stick, no idea why....).

Tempest Working but with sound lag.

UPDATE: so, I unplugged my keyboard and NOW AdvMAME sees the trackball in Tempest. Weird... But good. :-P
The issue of the sound lag remains, but the game is fine otherwise.

Details about the Tempest sound lag:
There is bad sound lag in Tempest using AdvMAME (my Pi is a 3B+). I've noticed this in a few games, for example also in Crystal Castles, where I had to move to 0.172 to run it without sound lag. For example, if I press "superzapper" the sound effect will play AFTER the zap attack occurs onscreen. But if I press "superzapper" playing Tempest on my PC, the sound effect is played correctly DURING the zap attack, which is correct. Vsync is set off, so it's that.

Kick Fixed!

UPDATE: so I copied a current kick.zip (not .106 specific) to the AdvMAME roms folder, and lo and behold that game now works fine (and uses the trackball). One thing I did change was for some reason earlier I'd added "kick" to the loader sh, and I now re-edited it to remove kick. So, for now that game is good. :-) NOTE: if the sound is weird, be sure to go into the video menu and turn OFF vsync. It's not needed for this game, and the sound will be smooth.

Thank you.
