Specific Resolution

Post by bowerst2 » Sun Nov 03, 2019 5:09 am

I have a cabinet that I built for a JAMMA Pandora’s box and I am thinking of buying a RaspberryJAMMA with ArPiCade to replace it.

I have a Dell 2007fpb 1600x1200 monitor and one thing that has always bugged me about the Pandora is that I can’t output at the monitor’s native resolution. 1024x768 is the closest I can get.

Does ArPiCade support 1600x1200 resolution or does it just have low res /high res modes?

ARpiCADE doesn't have any pre-done setup for 1600x1200. It could be done if you're happy changing settings and modifying scripts. Any RPi can do 1600x1200 according to the documentation. There may be some sort of performance penalty in some emulators, I'm not sure offhand, the regular high res mode for ARpiCADE is 480p so it's a lot more pixels you want to put on screen.

So... it could be done but isn't strictly supported, if you want to have a go at it I'd be happy to help. At least the config.txt bios file and the res changing script would need adjustments for it to work, also some settings on a per emulator basis may or may not need to be adjusted too.

Thanks, Maybe I just have to buy it and see how it looks at 480P. Whenever the monitor isn’t in native resolution it looks fuzzy, which was why I was asking. I imagine in native resolution, everything would be too tiny right?

At 1600x1200 without adjusting the scaling in emulators you would have a smaller picture but that would be fixable.

I'm not sure the games will look better on an LCD running a higher resolution though, the super sharp pixels look is not very CRT like.

ARpiCADE at 480p may look better than a Pandoras Box at 768p, depending on how they're setup. I know I prefer the 480p output of ARpiCADE to the 480p output of a 60in1. There's a fair bit of personal taste at play with an LCD, hard to say what you may prefer.

Thanks.

The LCD monitor has a DVI input. Can I just use the HDMI out port on the Pi and connect that directly to the LCD with a HDMI to DVI cable? This would bypass that DAC box that comes with the ArPiCade, correct?

This would not output any sound though. Can ArPiCade be set to output sound via the 3.5mm jack on the Pi?

Both can be done. I added a line in run.sh to shift sound to the Pi, it's disabled by default but all you have to do to activate it is remove the hash at the start of that line.

It's possible depending on your monitor you will also need to make 1 change in config.txt for the monitor to recognise the DVI signal. Most seem to be fine without it, at least in my experience.

You should set it to high res mode before doing any edits to config.txt.
