"Joystick shortcut" to exit games not working

Every time I try "Hold 1P Start for a couple of seconds + 2P Start exits a game back to the menu", I only get a black screen, no menu. Then I have to power cycle the whole cabinet to start over. I know I could also reset the Pi instead, but I haven't installed my reset/run button yet and would hate to have to do that every time anyway.

Any idea what I might be doing wrong? All of the other in-game joystick shortcuts work just fine FYI.

I'm not sure what's actually going wrong but it sounds like the exit command is actually working (or nothing would happen) but the menu is not reloading for some reason. I haven't seen this happen or heard of this happening to anyone else before so I'm a bit unsure what to suggest.

Do games running in MAME 172 or 181 also have the same issue? I ask as they do not use the hotkey system. What version of ARpiCADE are you running?

It may be worth plugging a USB keyboard into the Pi before powering up and see if exiting a game with 'esc' works normally or exhibits the same behaviour as the shortcut. If the behaviour is the same exiting with 'esc' I think the software may have an issue and the best course of action may be to re-image the SD card to see if that fixes it. If 'esc' exits normally I'm not sure what may be going wrong at this stage.

After I got home from work yesterday I re-imaged my SD card on a whim and everything works now! Thanks for your help.

How’d you re-image? I’m now having this problem. I never made a backup and now I’m stuck!

What's happening with your current image/SD card? Hopefully it's not totally toasted.

Every time I boot up the ARpiCADE it always gives me a message saying something like, this may take 1 minute for every 850 roms. And then after it finally loads, I choose a game. After I’m done with that game and I want to exit by holding 1p start or even esc on the keyboard, it gives me a blank black screen and I can’t exit. If I press enter, it’ll load the same game I was just playing.

Well that sucks. Sounds like my first SD card before I re-imaged. Where did you get your original image? Did you buy a pre-imaged SD card? Maybe you can contact ArPiCade and ask them to send you another one?

I say give them your order number, tell them your situation, and ask them to send you a link so you can download a new image from scratch. Couldn't hurt!

Actually I think I got it going again. I ended up downloading the newest 3.8 file that they released, added all the roms from the sd card to another sd card and bam! The only thing that bothers me right now is every time I boot up the ARpiCADE, it loads for a good 3 minuets before I can start playing. But the actual problem I had before with the games not exiting correctly is now fixed. Thank you for all your help buddy I really d appreciate it.
