Newbie - help upgrading to 3.71

Help! New to this. I have an Arpicade with a 3.7 SD card. Works great, but I wanted to try to update it to 3.7.1. I installed Ext2Fsd, but now when I insert my 3.7 SD card Ext2Fsd locks up (Not Responding) and when I click on the drive in Windows Explorer (which does show a drive as "SDHC card") it asks to format the card - of course I cancelled that since it works in my Arpicade. I'm running Windows 10 on the machine I'm attempting to upgrade the SD card on. Any tips/tricks/tutorials? The update recommends a fresh 3.7 image but I can't seem to figure even that out, without some Linux guidance

Not only does Ext2Fsd not respond after launching...there's no discernable way to end the task aside from rebooting and uninstalling. There's got to be a better way to update this.

I don't think you need Ext2Fsd to update. You just want to put your SD card in to your windows machine, and then copy the file and folder in the .zip to the main folder that mounts under windows (which should be /boot). The rest of the update process you do on the arcade machine, in the ARpiCADE configuration menu.

The /boot/ partition on the SD card is usable by windows, and doesn't require additional drivers. It was designed this way to make it easy to load roms and do incremental updates.

One other thing. I looked into Windows 10 support for Fat32 partitions (which is what the /boot/ partition is on the 3.7 ARpiCADE image). It looks like it should be fully supported.

So, when you place your SD card into your windows machine, it should mount the card and produce a drive you can write to.

When you put your SD card into your windows machine - does this drive mount? If not, I'm wondering if the card is corrupt, and you just need to use Etcher and burn another image of 3.7 on to it.

Just a guess. My apologies for not being more specific than this, as I run on a Mac and don't have access to a Windows machine.

It sounds like for whatever reason the Fat32 partition on your SD card isn't readable by Windows. You should not need ext2fsd to update (hadn't heard of ext2fsd before, normally I recommend Paragon to see the ext partition from Windows or Mac but from the look of it they do much the same thing) as the Fat partiton should be readable by Windows.

If your copy of 3.7 has been customised you may want to back it up first which you should be able to do from any disk imaging program.

To burn a fresh copy of 3.7 all you need is the 3.7 image (available from the downloads section if you don't already have it) and the program win32diskimager or Etcher (or other imaging program for Windows). The downloaded image will need to be extracted so you have the .img file to burn to the card. When you have made the 3.7 SD card Windows should be able to read the Fat partition for you to copy the update files onto it (after imaging you may need to eject the SD card and reinsert it). Follow the instructions included with the update, Windows should be able to copy the files onto the SD card and the actual update is applied on your cab using the service menu.

MIne's a custom (at least it has a custom splash screen) from HighScoreSaves.com - WIndows doesn't recognize it, so I don't think it's Fat32. If I pick up a blank 32GB card, do I need to partition it, or will burning the 3.7 image manage partitioning for me (I have Etcher)? Thanks!

Great idea to use a new SD card to try this.

You do not need to partition the new card, if you are using the 3.7 image. All the partition information is already there.

You just need to use Etcher to write the 3.7 image to an SD card, and then when you mount the SD card on your windows machine the /boot/ partition should be visible.

Thanks! Next dumb question.... The 3.7 image I downloaded is a "tar.gz" file, inside is a "tar" - when I try to unzip the "tar" it gets 90% done, then gives a "Unexpected end of data : 170211_ARpiCADE-3.7.tar" error. I've tried downloading it with both Chrome & Firefox from the arpicade.com site (is there another site for the image?)

Just imaging the card will get you going but the space will be limited to the size of the image. To get the most out of your 32 gig SD card you will also want to resize the fat32 partition after moving the other partition to the end of the card. I use GParted to do it but I would think any good partitioning program would work. I don't have any Windows specific instructions for doing this but a user on Aussie Arcade called g5k made a great post covering how it did it on Mac including photos. On Windows 7zip should be able to untar properly, if you haven't already try it or if you have already maybe try updating it.
